We work hard to protect our clients from online security threats. A lot has changed in the past few years, including the things that threaten your company. These could come in the form of key loggers that record you as you enter your login information or DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) attacks, which overwhelm a service with fake traffic, causing it to crash.
As part of our service, we advise our clients to install software updates as soon as they become available and support them through the process where they need help.
But if you visit a website that asks you to install an Adobe Flash update… STOP! Flash was discontinued in 2020 and is no longer supported, so you should assume that any Flash update messages will be a security threat. Be a human firewall!
Currently, ‘botnet’ campaigns use fake Flash messages to install a malicious browser extension called Cloud9. You could be a target if you use Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge. Worse still, the Cloud9 botnet will attempt to install additional malware on your device or network if it’s not stopped in time. This attack is hard to spot because it looks like a genuine request, and just about anyone can become a target.
But there are things you can do to protect your business.
A wise, unknown speaker once said, “The best offense is a good defense.” As unlikely as it may seem, this adage applies to football and cybersecurity. You need a strong defense in football to keep the other team’s playmakers out of your endzone. With cybersecurity, you need a strong defense to keep cyber criminals from getting their hands on your personally identifiable information (PII). You need the most robust defense possible to protect your data. Last season, the Buffalo Bills had the NFL’s best defense. So, it’s safe to say you want your cybersecurity to be like the Buffalo Bills.
What can I do to protect my company from cyber threats?
- Make everyone aware of the threat. If your people know what to look out for, it’s less likely they’ll install the update in the first place.
- Keep software updated. Ensure everyone’s running the latest version of their browser and that security software is up to date.
- Enable Enhanced Protection in your browser’s Privacy and Security settings. Enhanced Protection will warn you if you stumble upon a risky website or download.
These are just a few things you can do to protect your company from cloud9 but many things need to be completed to protect your company from the array of cyber threats it faces. We can help you keep your business protected from cyber criminals. Just get in touch.
